The State of Arizona provides compensation for family members and friends caring for individuals with developmental disabilities.
In recent years, services for children with developmental disabilities have evolved to recognize that family members and friends often already provide care. As a result, they can now be compensated for these services, even without leaving a paid career.
If your child or someone you know qualifies for Habilitation, Attendant Care, or Respite services through the Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), you may be eligible to receive payment as a caregiver.

Finding a qualified care worker can be challenging.
The care provided by parents, guardians, or friends is often the best fit for the child.
If they are already meeting the child's needs, receiving compensation is a logical choice.
They can fill schedule gaps for other providers or serve as the primary caregiver when no one else is available.

To become a paid caregiver in Arizona, you must meet the following requirements:
Be at least 18 years old
Possess a high school diploma or GED
Have a valid driver's license or state ID card
Provide a valid Social Security number
Be legally authorized to work in the United States
Be physically and mentally capable of providing care
Pass a background check and obtain a valid Arizona fingerprint clearance card
Hold current CPR and first aid certifications
If applicable, complete Direct Care Worker (DCW) training and certification through an AHCCCS-approved program

General Program Guidelines
Parents and guardians can provide Habilitation and Attendant Care services but are not eligible to provide Respite Care. However, non-guardians or friends may qualify for Respite Care.
Those working from home for another employer cannot provide DDD services during the same hours.
All participants must meet eligibility requirements to qualify for compensation.
All Attendant Care Providers must complete the state-required Direct Care Worker (DCW) Training series, as well as 6 hours of continuing education annually.
